 Summary: Severo Ochoa’s love for research and medicine started at an early age, similar to his love for this future wife, Carmen García Cobián. We accompany this Asturian scientist from the beaches of Luarca during his childhood to odyssey through various countries around the world: His happy life and work in Madrid, the proclamation of Spain’s Second Republic, the Civil War, the couple’s exile following the war, his years in Nazi Germany, where Severo witnessed the horrific persecution of Jewish friends, and his arrival in New York, where at last he is awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

 Summary: Lars Belden, an estate agent, married with a son, suddenly witnesses his life come to a standstill the 29th February. By chance, he reads in a newspaper about the suicide of Sela Huber, his ex-girlfriend. The curiosity and love her he still feels for her lead him to go to her flat. There he discovers that her study, which had never before been entered by anyone else, is full of tapes in which she obsessively recorded her life. Bit by bit he pieces together Sela’s past, plus that of others who played a role in her life and in his own. Gigante

 Summary: Jara, stocky but shy, leads a solitary life as a security guard in a supermarket in Montevideo, Uruguay. It is his job to monitor the security cameras from a small room. Since he works the nightshift and not much happens, he does more or less what he would at home: he watches DVDs, does the crossword and listens to music. But one day his life changes when he meets one of the cleaning ladies by chance. At first he watches her through the security cameras, but soon he begins following her when she goes to the cinema, the beach, and even she goes out with a man. Bucarest: La memoria perdida

 Summary: “Bucharest” is a documentary about memory. From within a double exile, it follows the personal pursuit of Albert (a journalist born in exile in 1962) to recuperate his own roots. His father, the Spanish politician Jordi Solé Tura, who became a key figure during the Spanish Transition, was obliged to go into exile towards the end of the 1950s for his militant anti-Franco beliefs. Now, after living a life replete with passionate personal and political experiences, Jordi has begun to enter a new, internal exile, this time with no possibility of returning: a fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Every day, his memory slips further away. With this film, Albert will resurrect the memory not only of his father’s atypical life, but also that of other historical Spanish figures such as Santiago Carrillo, Felipe González, Jorge Semprún and the ex-president of Catalonia Jordi Pujol, and little known episodes in the fight against Franco’s dictatorship and the Cold War.  Summary: Whilst carrying out research on the machismo between the workers in the docks in Havana, Oscar, a screenwriter, meets Lina, a single mother and dock worker, whose life experience he claims to use to create the leading character of his film. They soon fall for each other signalling trouble for his marriage, putting the director in a sticky situation, and demonstrating the director’s inability to overcome his own contradictions.

 Summary: Following a successful run in the theatre, the storyline centres on the complex policies for exchanging housing in Cuba, and the conflict between modern and traditional values. A matchmaker offers to find a “suitable” house in the neighbourhood for her daughter, taking her out of reach of the mechanic that pesters her, and finding her a “good catch”. She sets about planning a whole series of barters involving any number of people and houses, to land the mansion of her dreams. The only factor she hasn’t included her in grand plan are her daugher’s decisions.

No escatima esfuerzos, en su planificación de una cadena de permutas en la que involucra a innumerables personas y viviendas, que le proporcionará la mansión con la que sueña. Plaf o demasiado miedo a la vida

 Summary: “Plaff”, or “Splat”, is the onomatopoeic sound of an egg being thrown against a wall, a window, or a person, and the first title of this film which reveals the ancient practices in Cuban witchcraft, still commonplace throughout the 20^th century.  The main story centres around a puzzle: Who is it that throws the enigmatic eggs against Concha’s house? She is a middle-aged woman, follower of an Afro-Cuban faith, weighed down by her prejudices and fears about life, and who would like to get rid off her daughter-in-law. There are seven suspects, but the solution arrives at the very last moment, in the manner of a classic detective story.

Throughout the three days of the wake, the mass, and the burial, the game of keeping up appearances is evident in this conservative bourgeois family in which their problems are apparent but never mentioned.

Léa rejects this hypocritical world which cloaks the skins like a made-to-measure suit.

 Summary: LT22 Radio La Colifata is a radio station produced entirely by patients from J. T. Borda psychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires. It is recorded and broadcast from the hospital’s gardens, and is listened to throughout the world. This is a radio station which questions the limits between madness and reason. A radio which blurs the limits between the “sane” and the “insane”. It gives a voice to whose have been denied it for so long: the “insane”, who are capable of showing us, the “sane”, all those things that we are not capable of seeing.

 Summary: Three people meet one winter’s night at a bus stop and witness a dog being abandoned. They are Mila, a secondary school teacher who has been on sick leave for a year after being attacked by one of her students; Celso, a married security guard with a child who has serious economic problems but is about to find out that he is going to be a father again but this time to twins; Valeria, a cello student with troubled family and sentimental relationships. These three people drift off on a journey that will lead them  to face up to their fears and frustrations, and finally make an extreme decision that will change their lives.

 Summary: Pérez is a bus driver who drives back and forth always on the route. One day he goes, the next he comes back. He is forty years old, has no friends, is shy and meticulously neat. He barely speaks, earning himself the nickname “The man who doesn’t speak”. On his journey he passes through various villages, going through the same motions from one day to the next, eating the same food in the same place. However something in one of the local cafés upsets this daily routine. This is where Romina, the school teacher, lives. Behind her simple appearance lies a mysterious and attractive woman. She lives in a caravan. Only those that know her past know why they never see her with a man. She finds it difficult to form relationships. Her pupils seem to be her only contact with the outside world. The only thing that attracts her attention is the bus that makes its daily stop there. When Romina has to have a medical test, since she cannot drive, her only option is to ask Pérez to bring her… Pérez spends the entire journey obsessed with the sample bottle, but when he gets distracted for a second, the bottle falls and breaks. He can’t believe he’s been so clumsy, he wants Romina to like him, so he comes up with a crazy solution. And so begins a very special love story between two very special people which brings a smile to the face even in the toughest of situations.

Resumen: Pérez es chofer de una línea de ómnibus y siempre realiza el mismo recorrido. Un día va, al otro día vuelve. De cuarenta años, sin amigos, pulcro, tímido. Casi no habla, por eso le dicen “El Mudo”. En su viaje pasa por varios pueblitos donde repite los mismos movimientos día a día, se sienta en el mismo lugar y come lo mismo. Sólo en uno de esos paradores hay algo que lo trastoca y conmueve. Allí vive Romina la maestra del pueblo. Su simpleza esconde a una mujer atractiva y misteriosa. Vive en una casa rodante. Sólo los que conocen su pasado saben porqué nunca se la vio con un hombre. Le cuesta relacionarse. Sus alumnos parecen ser su único contacto a tierra. Sólo la detención del ómnibus que pasa una vez al día por el pueblo llama su atención. Romina se ve obligada a hacerse un análisis y como no puede viajar le pide a Pérez que le lleve … el viaja ensimismado por ese frasco, pero en un descuido, se le cae y se rompe. No puede creer su torpeza, necesita quedar bien con Romina y se le ocurre una absurda solución. Este es el comienzo de una historia de amor muy especial entre dos personajes tan particulares que hace que aún el peor de los conflictos nos arranque una sonrisa.

Déjate caer

 Summary: In a neighbourhood like in any other city, in a square like in any other neighbourhood, three young people fritter away their time and their twenties. Nandi, Roberto Carlos, and Gabriel, or “Grabi” to them since they can’t pronounce his name properly.

The three are old enough to take control of their lives, but too immature to do so. Irresponsibly, they spend their days wandering and filling the void sat on benches telling jokes and buying litre bottles of beer with money lent by their parents. But when Sunci arrives on the scene, a young woman who is willing to start a relationship with Roberto Carlos, she upsets the balance which seems to anchor them to this world of dossers. 

Resumen: En uno de esos barrios que todas las ciudades tienen, con una de esas plazas que todos esos barrios tienen, pasan las horas tres jóvenes que empiezan a dejar de serlo. Nandi, Roberto Carlos y Gabriel, al que todos llaman “Grabi” porque nadie sabe pronunciar correctamente su nombre.

Los tres son suficientemente adultos para tomar las riendas de su vida pero también lo suficientemente inmaduros para tomarlas. Irresponsablemente, ven pasar la vida divagando y ocupando su vacío en un banco entre chistes y litros de cerveza que pagan con lo que les sacan a sus padres.

Don Quijote (Don Kikhot)

 Summary: This Soviet production, interpreted by the great Russian actor Nicolai Tcherkasov, the leading role in “Alexander Nevsky” and “Ivan the terrible”, is directed by Grigori Kosintzev, with the esthetic of the Spanish sculptor Alberto Sanchez, exiled in the URSS.

Don Quijote, Cervantes’s great work of art, was brought to life again following Stalin’s death, the leader had not been a fan of the novel. It is an adaption which has remained loyal to the book, this time given a Marxist reading, emphasizing the significance of class wars.

It was filmed in Crimea with an array of special effects which are impressive for the time: the Sovcolour system, stereophonic sound, etc. This version has been recently restored by Lenfilm.

Resumen: Esta producción soviética, interpretada por el gran actor ruso Nicolai Tcherkasov, protagonista de “Alexander Nevsky” e “Iván el Terrible” esta dirigida por Grigori Kozintsev, con el asesoramiento estetico del escultor español Alberto Sánchez, exiliado en la URSS.

 Don Quijote supuso la recuperación de la obra de Cervantes tras la muerte de Stalin, a quien no le gustaba la novela. Es una adaptación fiel del libro al que se dio una lectura marxista, subrayando la importancia de la lucha de clases.

Fue rodada en Crimea con un despliegue de medios impresionante para la época: efectos especiales, el sistema Sovcolor, sonido estereofónico… La versión que presentamos ha sido recientemente restaurada por Lenfilm.

Summary: Santiago has never been the main character of anything, neither of theatre nor of cinema, not even of his own life. But Santiago had never thought that to lodge his thirtyish son Guillermo in his house for some days would change his life so much. “Vete de mí” is a “familiar” mask dance, a dance of encounters and mix-ups between two congenital selfish men: a compulsive liar that is able to alter the emotional state of relatives surrounding him, and a supporting actor who has not been successful in his working life and who discovers that his whole life is a lie. It’s a satiric and bitter comedy about how to arrive to our fifties, lose our job and find our son, but desire just the opposite.

Summary: The Montoro family is going on holiday to the Cullera coast. Coinciding with the visit from some of his English friends, he meets Juliana, an attractive, sensual young girl who immediately fascinates him.
